Our crazy, charity challenge!

It's a Wrap take on the Three Peaks

At the start of the year we decided it would be great to take time to support some charities close to our hearts and to give back a little more as a team. Discussions ensued on what we could do as a fundraising challenge and the idea of completing the Three Peaks Challenge was bantered around. At the time, back in January it seemed like a great idea – visions of walks in the warm sunshine, spending quality time as a team and the chance to raise money for two impressive charities. How could we say no?

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Three Peaks Challenge the aim is to climb the dizzy heights of Ben Nevis (1,345m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1,085m). Doesn’t sound too bad does it? But here’s the catch; the three climbs are to be completed in under 24hours, including travelling time between the sites. That’s a walking distance of approximately 24 miles, a vertical climb of over 3,000 metres and lastly not forgetting the small matter of the 460 miles of driving between the 3 peaks…all in a day. It’s considered to be one of Britain’s toughest outdoor challenges and we think we might be more than a little crazy!

Fast forward to May and we’re now just a few weeks from our challenge date of 18th June. We’ve been training…but in all honestly, probably not enough and we anticipate sore muscles in the coming weeks as we up our pace significantly. There have been a number of practise walks to build the team’s stamina with the most recent taking place at one of the Three Peaks – Mount Snowdon.

For a May bank holiday weekend in Wales, the weather was sadly, rather typical. With plenty of other folk also attempting the challenge we were glad of the company during what ensued to be a very soggy and misty walk. Having done our best to be prepared for wet weather we thought we were suitable attired but that didn’t prevent boots so wet they oozed water, or the team looking like drowned rats as we finally returned to the car in an impressive 3hrs 50mins.

We’re aiming to raise money jointly for Hospitality Action

So why are we doing this challenge? We’re aiming to raise money jointly for Hospitality Action and Cancer Research UK, both deserving charities with significant importance to the It’s a Wrap team. That’s where you come in – we would really appreciate your assistance! Here's some more information on our chosen charities and why we feel it’s important to support them –

Cancer Research's pioneering work into how to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer has benefitted millions of lives over the past 120 years. Over the last 40 years, cancer survival in the UK has doubled thanks to research teams like those of Cancer Research UK. In the 1970s just 1 in 4 people survived their disease for 10 years or more, today 2 in 4 survive. Cancer Research aims to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 patients surviving the disease by 2034. Many of the It’s a Wrap team have personal experience of cancer and the devastation it creates, and the company are proud to be able to support such a worthy cause.

Hospitality Action offer vital assistance to all who work within hospitality in the UK. There to offer help and advice when times get tough, the charity supports members of the hospitality industry no matter what their challenges - from physical or mental health issues to financial difficulty or family problems. We all know what a devastating year 2020 was for the UK hospitality sector and as a supplier to the industry, the team at It’s a Wrap are keen to show direct support to our customers and help them back on their feet after what’s been a really hard few years.
